How to Secure your Netgear Router?

Router Security is a major concern for many who does not know how to fix the problem. I will discuss in detail on how to make your Netgear router almost impenetrable in the following section.

Step 1: First, connect your Netgear router to your computer using an Ethernet cable. One end of this cable goes inside the LAN port of your router(your router has multiple LAN ports) while the other end goes inside the computer’s ethernet port.

The DSL cable from your modem will go inside the WAN or Internet port on your Netgear router. Wait for few minutes to let the connection between the two get established.

Step 2: Open your web browser and type in 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the URL field and hit Enter.

Note: This is Netgear’s default IP address to get access to router setup page. If this does not work, search google, “Default IP address, ‘region’.”, as these vary from region to region.

Step 3: Now you will be redirected to the router login portal, here enter the SSID and Password as provided by your ISP. In case your ISP did not provide you with any, use ‘admin’ in the SSID and leave the Password field blank. This is default login credential for Netgear router and may vary from region to region.

Step 4: Once on the main settings dashboard of your Netgear router click on ‘Security’ from the left-hand side menu. You will be redirected to Security settings page.

Step 5: On the settings page, change the ‘Encryption’ type to WPA2 from the slide down menu. WPA2 type of encryption is considered to be the safest. Also, just below the Encryption type, you will notice a box for ‘Pass-Key’, this is your wifi password. Create a strong password making use of uppercase, lowercase, and Numerals. Write it down somewhere in case you forget. Save the settings.

Step 6: Now, come to MAC address filtering option from the main dashboard. This option is used to limit the number of devices connecting to your router device. Your devices have a unique MAC address and using this setting, you need to feed in the MAC addresses of your devices you want to grant access to connect to your network.

This way only those devices with their addresses saved will be able to see and connect to your network.

These are some of the steps one needs to follow to fortify their wireless network against intruders. Hopefully, this will help the users to better their security features.
