How to Set Up OpenVPN and DynamicDNS on NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 WiFi Router?

Are you an R7000 Nighthawk router user? If yes, then you have come to the right place as this is one of the most popular routers available in the market today. It has many incredible features like Dynamic DNS and open VPN support. Both these features work in sync to provide you with a safe gateway.

You can easily stream network resources and access files on your home network. This is all done using a robust VPN connection. With this, you don’t only get a dynamic address but you can open VPN clients as well.

Why does One Require an Open VPN Connection?

With an open VPN connection, you can easily get connected to a home network from any place in the whole world. It functions in a different way compared to a program as it provides you remote access to your system.

In reality, it brings the client’s computer to your network remotely. It keeps devices and network drives in the explorer. Moreover, it is safeguarded by an open r7000 VPN and is known for its safety and security. So, let us begin with the steps to set up an open VPN.

Step 1: Create a DNS Account

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that your OpenVPN clients are getting connected without the need of resetting the connection settings because of changing IP addresses. Luckily, NETGEAR has made the procedure quite simple. Go to Advanced Settings and then select Netgear Dynamic DNS. First of all, you are required to enter the dynamic DNS information.

If you don’t have these details, then check it on your router. Then, you need to enter the username and password. After that, you will be redirected to a registration process. After that, you are going to receive a verification email. Once this is done, then you will be able to move forward with the next step.

Step 2: Turn on OpenVPN

When you are done with the previous step, then you need to turn on the integrated open VPN. Just go to the section of Advanced setup and then select Open VPN. After that, tick the box and then select the option of Apply.

In case you do not have a dynamic setup, then a box of warning will appear before you on the screen to notify you that the configuration file has been downloaded. It is recommended to set up a DNS that is dynamic.

Step 3: Download and Install the OpenVPN Client

In order to download the OpenVPN client that you desire to use on your remote device, you must connect to the open VPN network. There is an open link available on the VPN settings page, which will further redirect you to the download page.

Now, you can easily get the client that you find right for your device. When the download is done, then you need to carry out the prompts appearing on the screen.

Step 4: Change the Name of Your VPN Network Device

On your Windows, go to the Control Panel section and then navigate to the Network and Sharing Center. After that, change the adapter settings and then change the name of your network device. After that, select the Netgear VPN option.

Step 5: Download the OpenVPN Configuration Files and Copy Them

After that, the configuration files will get created automatically and you will have to connect them to your home network through an open VPN. After that, go to the OpenVPN configuration screen. Open the files and copy the content to the configuration directory. For this, go to Program Files, then select Open VPN, and then select Config.
